2009 Volunteer Stats:
  • 63.4 millions Americans volunteered (1.6 million increase compared to 2008 and largest since 2003)
  • Volunteers provided 8.1 billion hours, which has an estimated value of $169 billion
  • Women age of 45-54 increased their volunteer services the most
  • Religious organizations are the most popular places for people to volunteer
  • The volunteer rate increases as home ownership increases
  • Individuals with higher education volunteer at higher rates
  • High unemployment rates equal low volunteer rates
  • Volunteering is less common in high poverty areas

    Decreasing vitamin deficiencies in newborns and children up to the age of five is the goal of Vitamin Angels. They wish to make vitamins more available and accessible, as well as increase the use of them. By doing this, the health and life expectancy of children increases.

    The goal of Keep A Breast is to eliminate breast cancer by exposing young people to prevention methods, detecting it early and supporting those who have it. They believe that making healthy choices when it comes to your lifestyle can have positive long-term health benefits.


    IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America)


    IAVA is a group committed to assisting troops and veterans that serve or have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by improving their lives. They target issues such as mental health injuries, healthcare for women, the VA System and GI Bill educational benefits. IAVA is a way for people to connect with others who have shared in their experiences and allows them to assist each other with the transition back into civilian life.
